4 Lessons Two “Jordans” Can Teach Every Entrepreneur

Michael Jordan and Jordan Spieth have excelled in their chosen sport. There are lessons in their excellence every entrepreneur can learn from!

1. Multiple skills. Both men participated in and excelled at multiple sports in school. This experience taught them to diversify and become proficient in multiple skills. Each skill builds on the other. Sportsmanship, dedication, teamwork, and overcoming defeat, to name a few. All of these skills would also benefit an entrepreneur. The more skills you develop, the more you will understand about your business, people and overcoming obstacles.

2. Focus. To be great, both men had to focus on one sport! They knew what they were good at, passionate about, and focused on building their goals, dreams and skills around that one sport. Being an entrepreneur, you too must focus on the main thing. What are you passionate about? What are you good at? Set goals and dedicate yourself to being great at what you do best, then make choices based on accomplishing this objective.

As an entrepreneur, to get to mastery, you need coaching to help develop your skills, see “blind spots”, keep you accountable and most importantly, to mentor you and support your efforts and goals.

Failure isn’t failing, quitting is. The ability to persevere in sports is the same mindset required to be a successful entrepreneur. Learn your lessons, get better, and persevere. Who you become by committing to your goals, staying committed, learning and growing along the way far exceeds the trophy!

To become a great entrepreneur, there are lessons to learn from great athletes. The focus, mentoring and perseverance help both the good athlete and good entrepreneur to become great! And don’t forget, who you become along the way is the greatest reward of all!

Hmm…I would not have considered dedication a “skill,” although I guess it can be learned. Re focus and passion: It also helps to be sure that there is a market for your offerings or all the focus and passion in the world won’t make you a financial success.

The part about diversification is definitely something our generation didn’t grow up with. It was normal then to just pick one thing and go with it. (And stay with it for what we thought would be 40+ years to retirement.) I like how there are so many combinations now where you can really be good at a few things that all fit together. Opens more doors. Great inspiration, Sheryl!

Great topic! Interesting that you brought out how the guys ultimately focused on one sport, but diversified earlier on. It is good to get a wider range of experience so you know what you are passionate about and gifted in.
